Description

The main source of income for the island of Bonaire is tourism, which is based on an intact natural environment, especially the coral reefs. Recent studies however indicated a deteriorating condition of the reef.

Increasing algae growth indicates a delicate oligothroph water condition and the tropical coral reefs are impaired by increasing levels of nutrients caused by untreated effluents to the sea.

Purpose of the project is therefore the planning of an orderly waste water collecting (vacuum system) and treatment system (SBR plant) for the island of Bonaire.

For the evaluation of the effects of the project on the environment Dorsch Consult Wasser und Umwelt GmbH was commissioned to develop an environmental impact assessment.
